Final day: Sailing day to Amsterdam (Friday)

View from our room today! Sailing in the North Sea. We love the long boat River cruises partly because you can pretty much always see land. This ocean cruise has been similar, except for today when we’re sailing from Skagen to Amsterdam for the flights home. The ship never feels busy except for today when everyone is necessarily on board. Still, it’s not “crowded”. 


The ship is beautiful. Viking doesn’t recommend their cruises for people with physical challenges because most of the tours involve a lot of walking, usually on uneven cobblestones. But we’re seeing a few people who rarely leave the ship and are finding plenty to do. Here are some of the areas:

Atrium with lots of seating on 3 floors. Game and puzzle tables, cards, etc. Guitar player in some areas, piano and violin in the evenings.

This was our favorite bar area. Right next to the piano/violin music.

Shops, spa and workout area (we never set foot in that…but made good use of the shop (not the jewelry tho) and Deb had a facial at The Spa).

Wintergarden, where they have Afternoon Tea. Indoor pool area; we’ve not seen anyone in the pool, but lots napping on the lounge chairs. Some overlook the pool and others overlook the scenery going by. And you can eat in the pool bar area.

Dining rooms in this order: World Cafe (buffet--whole pig today🐖) and the Restaurant. The 2 specialty restaurants that require reservations. Also a place for little sandwiches, soup and desserts, Mamsen’s.

There is a gelato station in the World Cafe as well. We felt it was our duty to taste test all the flavors. Last ones today: Chestnut and Chocolate. (We tried it before I remembered to take the picture. We almost had to go get more!🍨)




Farewell event; this is the entire crew. Followed by a Beatles Songbook concert in this Showroom. The night before was Motown music.

The Captain gave a little talk and wished us well as we go back to reality. He reminded us that next time we step out of the shower and drop the towel on the floor, it will still be there when we come back.😂


Last evening toasting that we made it to 70 years! (Well, one of us is ONLY 69 and 11 months….) 
Desserts tonight (yes, we’re aware that there are 4 of us and 5 desserts…don’t worry about it.)


Happy birthday to us!🎉🎂 This cruise has been a great way to celebrate!

Headed to Bergen

Back to Viking for another ocean cruise - this time to Norway, Denmark and fly out of Amsterdam. Viking Shores & Fjords. Dave and Deb Scroggie are friends from elementary school (!) and we are all turning 70 this year (they already have...I've got MONTHS to go...) so we're celebrating with a trip through the Fjords that should be beautiful! Our Viking Tour agent, Max, tells us that there is a new Entrance/Exit System (EES) in Europe. We will likely be in line for awhile at the Frankfurt airport to copy our passport, our photo and provide fingerprints to the system. Once in the system, this should be good for 3 years, so at least we'll be covered for Scroggie's next cruise and our's next year. (We land in Frankfort at 5:45 a.m. and have a 5-hour layover, so we should have enough time to stand in line!) There is also a global oil crisis due to the war in Iran, so we are keeping fingers crossed that our flights are not canceled either way.  Scandanavian countries h...

Half Day 1: Bergen, Norway

Took advantage of the dry day and walked around town. We’re here until we board the ship on Saturday. The hotel is beautiful. Drinks in the lobby bar. Dinner at Marbat close by. Traditional Norwegian food: brisket, chicken fricasee, dumplings with lamb and sausage. Streets of Bergen. Deb and Dave are figuring out directions. Dave Scroggie is no help.😂 And of course there is a Starbucks and a McDonalds! It’s daylight here til about 10 pm but we did not make that…. Full day here tomorrow, Friday.

It ain’t over ‘til it’s over! And now it’s over. (Sunday 5/31)

  Lots of quality time in the Paris airport today! And a lot of time to tell every little detail of our travel saga. Just kidding, it will SOUND like every detail but it’s only the bullet points: (gave quite a bit of detail in yesterday’s post!) -departed Paris for DTW at 4 pm Paris time.  -at about 6:45, a mechanical issue and we’re headed back to Paris. Landed at 9:30. -by 10:15, entire plane of passengers at the Air France counters learning that we would be rebooked “automatically” (some had flight info; we did not) -given a hotel voucher for a Holiday Inn Express near the airport.  -by 11:00 we were at the hotel picking up a pizza from the bar which was the “dinner included.” At least the pizza was good! -at midnight Snap Chatting with an Air France (AF) rep. Disconnected mid chat, no resolution. (No phone # to call) -At 2:30 am hour-long AF Snap Chat with no resolution; we need to go to the airport in person (where we absolutely were the night before.) -at 3:45, text...
