Oslo and Oslofjord (Wednesday)

Back in a fjord! Very cooperative beautiful weather today! High 60’s and sunny! View from the ship this morning:

We visited Vigeland Park, a free park displaying over 200 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland. The city gave this park to him as his canvas, but he was not paid for any of the sculptures (with one exception, later). The theme of the park is “Circle of Life”, showing all sculptures of people.

From babies to family to teens/young adults to older people….
Not too phallic, huh?😂 Apparently old Gustav was quite old school. He had 3 long-term relationships, all with young women. As soon as they started speaking up on their own, he moved on to a younger one. He was quoted as saying, “the most beautiful part of a woman is the top of her nose when her head is bowed”. (Sounds like a fun guy!)

For the nature lovers. Deb and Dave are also taking pictures of the flowers here.

The statues on the bridge are all about family. A favorite is the “angry boy” at the top right. In our experience, he must be 3. 😂

This fountain and statues around it are the only things Vigeland was paid to complete. (Digressing: I just love the Erase feature of Google Photos. There was a woman in the background taking a photo of the fountain and I completely erased her from this picture!)

This statue is the only one in the park that is clothed…a selfie sculpture of the artist!

This is the Opera House, designed so people can walk on all the levels of the roof.

A floating sauna! You can rent these and float ‘til you get hot, then jump in the water!

This morning we drove out to where there is a ski jump used for training and some skiing events. The simulator wasn’t open yet but that could have been scary!

Afternoon Tea every day at 4, but this was the first day we’ve been on the ship at that time. Dave broke tradition and had a Cappuccino. (Also wanted to capture the wood design on the ceiling of this area of the ship!)

On the sun deck after tea on this beautiful day. The sun doesn’t set til after 10 pm.

And the Oslofjord! There’s only one way in and out of the fjord. We could have seen it at 6 am on the way in but decided on 8 pm on the way out! Very different from the fjord in Flam. Not as high or rocky, no waterfalls but several islands and homes along the way.

Lots of populated islands where the only way on is by boat. Then drag all your stuff up the mountain…. Also some islands not populated.

None of the islands are connected but there is a tunnel (Oslofjordtunnelen) under water that connects from one side of the fjord to the other that is 7306 meters or 4.5 miles long.

Now, many, many shots as we pass through the fjord. Most taken between 8:45 and 9:40 at night.

A close up of one of the coastline houses.

This fjord is 120 kilometers long (about 75 miles) so I’ll spare you hundreds more photos since we’ll probably be asleep before we’re out of the fjord.

Couple things about Oslo:

-Capitol of Norway

-population 750,000

-site of the annual Nobel Peace Prize ceremony (Alfred Nobel had been called “the merchant of death” since he made his fortune in dynamite and arms sales. He decided to change his legacy and in his will, directed that most of his fortune be used to fund annual awards recognizing those who have had “the greatest benefit on humankind”.  Thus the Nobel Prize was created.)

Tomorrow will likely be a shorter post!
